Well, I say you should start with a dirt cheap acoustic, my first guitar was twenty pounds. That way you'll know if you like it or not and it won't be a waste if you give up.
If you pick it up really well then after 6 months to a year you may wish to get a proper acoustic around £200, or maybe even skip straight to electric. Don't go wasting money.
I first bought my cheapo about 2 years ago. I strummed a bit, gave up and put it down. About a year ago I picked it up again and have been getting better and better. So at Christmas I picked up a proper acoustic (which I love). That cost me around £120, bargain.
By next year I'll have an electric. By that time I will have had enough practice to rock out.
Today, at lunch, I didn't eat! XD
Me and a friend were given permission to use a music classroom. Him on drums, me on guitar, we had a mega fun jam session. We eneded up with jam on all the clarinets and all over the floor XD (Sorry, terrible joke). Anyway, the twenty minutes or so we had were awesome. I was allowed the school's electric! =P
We were told we had to go into the cupboard to get an amp, it took us ages to open because of dodgy keys, and the amp inside was too big! But, I did see my future guitar (Pacifica =P) up on the shelf, shame I didn't have a shot.
We went back into the classroom and there was an amp there. ¬¬
We wasted a lot of time we could've been jammin'.
I just played some Bluesy type stuff and the drummer improvised. So enjoyable.
It was the drummer, from the screw up band, remember! XD
About the band, the pianist said he's left the band and our lead guitarist is better on piano than guitar, so I'm filling his spot and he gets piano, he wasn't there today though.
I get lead guitar! Yay!
We can also be a power trio! It was a bit pointless having the two guitars. I won't be screwing up any solos (well... probably not)!
Jamming is so fun! =P
That was a pretty Random Rant! XD
